Discussion within a group of peers can be a powerful way of exposing teachers to different viewpoints. When the group members are supportive, these varying points of view are wonderful input. As James (1996) points out, âThe person, using the group as solidarity to support others and to be supported, then becomes empowered to act productively elsewhereâ (p. 94). Discussions can center on teaching practices as well as the theories and beliefs that are behind those practices.
